2017 GM 3.6 oil filter issue causing internal engine damagehttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13600-2017-gm-36-oil-filter-issue-causing-internal-engine-damage/ The following are posts I made on the AOCA website outlining an issue(potential nightmare) we had on 2017 Chevrolet Colorado:

Unfortunately, I believe this is exactly what this may turn into for shops and consumers. We recently had a report of an oil filter failure on a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado with 13304 miles on the truck and the issue occurred 400 miles after our oil change. Customer had a check engine light come on so he headed right off to the dealer to have it checked under warranty. It had a VVT code stored and the dealer started looking into the issue. They found the filter failure and sent a picture of the image off to the customer. We used a Performax P0171 filter. The customer sent me the attached image of the obviously failed filter. I am immediately highly concerned, but the dealer is being unusually understanding of the failure. We spend some time with the service manager and find out that their appears to be an issue starting to show up on these vehicles, where the stand pipe in the filter housing is coming off with the old filter and being disposed of without the techs knowledge. We had great video of the oil change and their was nothing visible with the old filter as it was removed. The premises is that without the standpipes restricting/diverting functionality in place, full oil flow is blowing out the filter and the everything flows right down the filter housing port into the cylinder heads and remainder of the motor and plugs up components and passages. We asked for a picture of the filter housing and received image 2 attached. This appears that it may be a problem starting in 17 model year, but i can't be sure of that yet. I am digging for additional info now and will update as more information becomes available.

This appears to be both a GM issue and a in-shop issue.

Now that I see the notification GM released last week, i believe this issue occurred at the original oil change prior to the one we did. As I said, we had great video of the open end of the old filter as we removed it from the vehicle and I don't believe this stand pipe could have possibly been inside. Their is also no evidence of the tech struggling with anything "down in there" other then the normal A/C line interference issue. .

Looking at the design and the A/C line interference, I suspect that the stand pipe is being knocked loose as the filter is being "angled" around the A/C lines to get the old one out. I suspect the oring on the stand pipe is the only thing holding it in the oil filter housing. Once the standpipe is disposed of, the housing has to be replaced, as the stand pipe is not available separately. The housings are in short supply with only three left in the country on dealers shelves and none in Gm distribution centers. Their is a new part number for the housing and those are not available yet. Original pt# 12675707 and new pt# 12682014.

Looking at the attached illustrations and notice, it would not be easy to completely miss the fact that a problem was evident. The stand pipe looks too big to me to be easily missed. I suspect it is plastic and the words "housing cracked" was mentioned in the conversation with the service manager. I wonder if the stand pipe is actually cracking during removal of the filter, making it difficult/impossible to reinstall. If we did not do it, then why the old filter had not failed yet ours did, comes into question. Cold weather "full oil flow" was also mentioned in the conversation with the service manager, and those were the conditions at the time of the failure.

The images also create some questions for me. The new housing does not appear to be identical to the OE installed housing, so is it an already redesigned housing? The filter bulletin in the Napa/Wix box talks about an update to the filter to include a check valve in the top of the filter. Our old filter does not appear to have this check valve, the Napa/Wix does and our new stock P0171 filters also have it. Looking at the design of the stand pipe in the new housing, it would almost appear that the small nipple on the end of the stand pipe might make more sense if it fit into the open hole of the old filter. The stand pipe design almost seems wrong for the filter with the check valve, unless it is shorter than it looks and never reaches the upper end of the filter. Would be great if the next shop to have one of these off would post some additional pics to try and help reduce confusion.

Based on the notice from Gm, this does indeed look like it could get ugly. Although, this dealer covered all the extensive engine repairs under warranty(heads pulled, all new timing components, cleaning passages), i am not convinced all dealers will take that approach. In my case, it was nice(incredible?) to see GM step up and take responsibility. It helped that my customer (owner of the Colorado) retired from a GM primary supplier dealing with issues exactly like this for the later half of his career. He knew the right people to call to get the info needed to drill down to the root cause.

some get it, some don't?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13413-some-get-it-some-dont/ I am complexed about how many "Mechanics" just don't get it... I work with two guys older than myself, I am no spring chicken but not old either.. One of the guys had a car with a p0171 as most know a very common code lean bank 1.

He had replaced the o2 sensors two weeks ago on a Saturday a day I don't work.. The customer came back with the same code IMAGINE THAT ! So they asked me to take a look at it with the other mechanic, I had shown this guy about fuel trims a few weeks ago. I hooked my scanner up looked at 02 data , maf , long and short term fuel trims.. at idle the LTFT was high 19 not high enough to set the code, and the O2 showing what you would think low voltage (lean).

I raised the rpms and noticed the maf readings still low and the LTFT rising. At which point I put the car in drive and the LTFT really started to rise at idle and maf stayed low, I raised the rpms the car hesitated and the LTFT kept climbing..

I asked the guy what he thought he had no Idea.. So I told him pop the hood the air induction hose is broken between the maf and the throttle body.. He thought I was joking, He opened the hood and was in shock "how did you know that"? I told him simple I know what I am looking at and how things work, but my question to him was how come he did not know that. He looked like a deer in headlights..

He replaced the induction tube, at which point I hooked the scanner back up to show him that now we can prove our repair was good.. I asked him what he would think would happen he had no Idea. so I pulled up all the same items and told him to watch the LTFT and that it will fall quickly and the O2 would come to life.. Sure enough it did in fact the LTFT went a little negative -5 I asked him why he thought that happened he had no Idea, I explained it had been adding fuel for so long it is probably saturated and there is probably a lot of fuel still in the engine and exhaust manifold.. it would clean out as time goes by but that proves the repair is good. At which point I unplugged the scanner and that was that..

now today same lean code on a different car the guy looked at me I said remember what we did ? He said yea, I went over after about half an hour and he had not figured anything out.. in fact he had all kinds of not needed data up on the scanner.. I shook my head pulled up the fuel trims did a few easy checks noticed that the fuel trims went back in the good range with the rpms raised told him to look for a vac leak . HE found one I showed him the fuel trims again and how it verified the repair was good...

He still has no Idea of what we went over! is it me or is there a need for a lot of learning to be done .. do some people just have the knack and others are just destined to be guessers and parts changers?

Heater Core Replacement for a 96 Ford E350https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10452-heater-core-replacement-for-a-96-ford-e350/We just performed a heater core replacement for a 96 Ford E350. All Data book time for the job is 7.3 hours. The job took a considerable amount of time LONGER to complete the service. This job ended up taking 12 man hours to complete. Just wanted to get input from some other shops that have performed heater core replacements and if they all take longer than the estimated book time. Also, do you typically charge X hours over book time for a job like this for the estimate?

Duramax DEF Limp Modehttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10962-duramax-def-limp-mode/Had one of my good customers drive up in 13 GMC 3500 duramax in limp mode. Scanned it, DEF heater code . replaced the heater went to reset with Verus , still in limp mode. I send to dealer to resett DEF, they say looks like bed ECM/BCM . I go pick up truck/ reflash at my shop with J box, take to another local diesal guy we go in with these snap on scanners, still nothing. Customer starting to get irritated about this, not pissed at me me just the whole def thing. He says, i am going to drive it 50 miles to this guy who can turn this def stuff off. I say, have at it. I was looking online at a Corvette forum about a cloned Tech 2 he purchased on Fleabay. I was like ,wth, so i 2 day aired me this $380 tech 2 scanner to my house. I literally walk out to the truck unbox this thing ,I have never used a tech 2 in my life. Go right into the heater codes , reset the 3 heaters and bingo no DEF light , vehicle is out of limp mode. I am sitting here typing this going why in the world would I pay 6 grand for a verus that will not reset a DEF light. My mind is really thinking now. My Snap on guy is a great guy although I am about to go at it with Snap On . This is crazy to me. I have zero confidence in this machine today. I really think this industry is changing so fast, it is warp speed !!!!

Replace Brake Rotors in Pairs: Does anyone ever ask why?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9463-replace-brake-rotors-in-pairs-does-anyone-ever-ask-why/Ok, before you all begin assaulting and attacking me for being a half ass mechanic...let me explain:

I AM NOT posting this because I make a practice of replacing only one brake rotor or because I want to argue a case in favor of such practice. I, like most of you I imagine, have always been taught and trained to replace/refinish brake rotors ONLY in pairs. NO EXCEPTIONS. Or else the world will explode! haha...ok, well, maybe not the world I guess. But presumably something really bad will happen.

But do any of you ever get asked by the customer WHY you had to replace both rotors when only one was "bad"? What do you tell them? Do you just make something up, spout off the same generic response that your old boss/instructor/teacher/mentor, etc. told to you about how you need rotors of the same thickness for equal stopping force blah blah blah or do you actually KNOW the concrete scientific reasoning behind this "universal truth"? I myself am a little fuzzy on the details. It seems like I am constantly having to explain to customers that I had to replace BOTH brake rotors, but when they ask me why, I don't really know exactly. I'm hoping you guys can help me out with either a detailed explanation or a link to some technical artical that will explain it.

I will also accept personal experience as evidence such as "I tried replacing only one rotor one time and the customer was back the very next week in a full body cast with his lawyer pushing the wheel chair."

Ready: GO

Brake pad and rotor orderinghttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10139-brake-pad-and-rotor-ordering/Aloha everyone. I have few questions. I am mostly a MB guy was at the dealer for 15 years and now opened my own shop recently. From doing side jobs before I know for MB what pads and rotors don't squeek. And for MB I usually order from world pac. But since I am on my own now and taking in all makes and models and all the way in Hawaii I was wondering for other makes what brand pads and rotors do you guys use that don't squeek. To me it's embarrassing when a client comes back in 2 months with brake Squeek. I don't have a lathe so I would replace rotors if necessary. In Hawaii we have O Rielly and Napa who I can source from if I need it that day. But what brands of pads and rotors do you guys use that don't Squeek? Mahalo

Prius Oil Change - Did I do something wrong.https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10436-prius-oil-change-did-i-do-something-wrong/I am looking for someone to tell me if my shop did something wrong. I would prefer a technician who knows Hybrid Prius's. I am a 30 year tech but I know nothing about hybrids.

Here is the story:

Young man comes in for an oil change and tire rotation. We perform these services, wash and vacuum the car and off he goes. 30-40 minutes later we get a call from this young man saying his car won't go. He drove the car about 15-20 miles. So I have it towed in. The next morning I start the car right up. It ran great but I noticed the high voltage battery was at 1 bar. After reading Identifix I ran the car with the ac on high for a couple of hours. The battery stayed at 1 bar. I have the customer take the car and on the way home it charges fine. I recommended for him have the car checked and she was told that the only thing that can do that is leaving the key on.

Could this be possible?

He is looking for me to refund his $90 tow.

Techs and business cardshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10209-techs-and-business-cards/ Should techs be allowed to hand out business cards? Where I work we do/can hand them out. I have my own which have the business name on them, all my certifications and licenses along with the business phone number not mine personal number. When I hand out my card I always give the customer my Service writers card first and tell them that is who they will be contacting and then I give them my card.

I have come across the other "techs" cards (none of which are certified or have any licenses) one has the station name, his name followed by certified technician . On his card he has the ASE certified logo and then just his personal cell phone number. He is not certified nor does he have the stations number on it. The other guys card has the station name, his name followed by Technician specialized in all automotive repair. Followed by his cell number, the station number no where to be found on the card. This guy is very young has no training or schooling in fact is the first guys helper so to speak, he has a uniform but is paid by the other "tech" as his helper. Which in my mind brings up a whole other set of problems possibly legal, but I won't get into that.

Any way my thoughts are that these cards they are handing out are a conflict of interest and should not be allowed by any means and if continued the employee should be cut loose. What are you thoughts on business cards, mine are as such .. The way I have my card and hand the customer the service writers card first, I think is acceptable, or have the owner make the business cards for the "techs" with the information that he feels should be on the cards. I don't see a problem handing out the cards as long as the business's name and number is prominent on the card and the techs number is not on the card at all, and his or her qualifications can be and should be on the card. I also think that the service writers card needs to be handed out by the tech along with his or her card.

What are you practices or thoughts on the matter of business cards?

The "Gravy" Techhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9194-the-gravy-tech/I'm only 29, but I did start my automotive career at 16. Advancement and knowing the latest training has always been my number one goal. I am now the lead tech at my shop. Then you have the gravy tech, which seems to be filling the bays up more and more. The guys that don't care about training, don't care about the warranty job, and always seem to avoid the "challenging" repairs. You can't fire them because it's to busy OR you can't find the next quality technician to make your team more successful which seems to be more harder to find.

For management it's great, here is a guy we can pay 10.00 per hour, that does nothing but flushes, alignments and brake jobs, and makes the shop profit. For us technicians, it's being stuck with the nightmare electrical problems and diagnostic problems, trying to scrape up every possible hour to make ends meat.

I'm not really directing this to the younger guys that are just starting out in there career, but the guys that have been doing this longer than me, or even longer.

How do you guys handle these kinds of employees, to me it just seems like they will never change and always get away with the way they work.

Using aftermarket convertershttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9991-using-aftermarket-converters/Any input on aftermarket vs oem converters. Just got bit for the first time. Wondering if anyone has any experiences. What's bad in this case is - although it was disclaimed that using aftermarket a code could reappear, I feel responsible. She asked what I would use - I said aftermarket. I've never had issues.

Secondly the converter we sold her was in the $590 range OEM is over $1,000. Only lasted about 1,000 miles.

It seems also now that I have gotten that way with flashlights. A flashlight for working in the interior, A huge light that attaches to the hood when doing engine repair, a pocket flashlight, a flashlight to do a quick and safety check over the vehicle during routine service, a drop chord light when working underneath the car, and maybe a couple more stashed somewhere. Does anyone else have this problem?

TOYOTA AVALON 2008 Check Engine Light does not display when you turn the ignitionhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9956-toyota-avalon-2008-check-engine-light-does-not-display-when-you-turn-the-ignition/Please I need your suggestion. Am currently working on a Toyota Avalon 2008. It was not starting so I did a diagnosis and got the error code P0335- Crankshaft Position Sensor 'A' Circuit Malfunction and P0102 - Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input. I cleaned up the CKP sensor, same issue and I went ahead to replace it,replaced the air filter, I discovered the engine oil was very dirty and due for a change, I had to do that, the fuel filter was cleaned up. After all that the car came up, was fine for some time and went off again. I did another diagnosis and got P0393 - Camshaft Position Sensor 'B' Circuit High Bank 2. All this while the check engine light was still on. We noticed a cut on the cam shaft sensor and tried amending it. The car came up, was on for 15 minutes and went off again. Right now when you turn on the ignition all the dashboard lights comes up exclusive of the check engine light. What could be the likely cause?

ASE Test preparation resources?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9717-ase-test-preparation-resources/Just signed up to take 3 more ASE tests and I'm looking for suggestions on prep materials? Usually I just sail through the tests without studying, but these last 3 are my least familiar subjects. I know there is a lot out there and I'm hoping to hear whats work for you or your techs.

Any good transmission additives out there?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9352-any-good-transmission-additives-out-there/I wanted to get you guys' opinion/recommendation on transmission fluid additives? Are there any good ones out there?

I am generally not an additive kind of guy as I have seen all too many times the horrific issues "stop leak in a bottle" type additives cause. I have heard, though, when it comes to transmissions that some non-stop leak type additives can actually help free up valves and such in an old transmission. Some of the names I have heard good things about specifically are Trans-X and SeaFoam Trans. additive.

I really have a very limited experience with automatic transmission and to be honest don't understand them that well, I was hoping some of you transmission re-builders/gurus could help me out on this one.

Is there any that you would wholeheartedly recommend or am I better off not adding anything at all?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Tough Onehttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9178-tough-one/I'm not one to fuss and complain (unless you ask my wife), and I sure hate to talk bad about a product.

I've got to be honest though something is happening with advance auto and product quality. Maybe product quality as a whole.

Our town has 3 non oem stores, AAP, NAPA and a small local store. The local advance stocks more parts and their much more efficient and organized than the local napa.

Recently I've filed 5 labor claims to Advance.

1. Starter on pontiac vibe, installed and randomly clicked with no start. Installed a new one, today customer calls back its been clicking two weeks now it wont start at all. (Starters 3 weeks old) (3 labor claims)

2. 98 astro radiator - first one bent in u shape when I opened the box, installed second and it had 3 pin holes that were found in vacuum filling.

3. Same astro - new fuel pump for level sensor now the pumps drawing high amperage and vehicle will occasionally not start. Not filed a claim yet - still intermittent failure and not confirmed.

Obviously the staff has been very helpful yet they say "no one else is having problems" but thats not what I'm hearing around town. The staff at the store is the reason we've haven't gone elsewhere. They're great to work with.

Anyone else had any issues? Looking like a real idiot to my customers and of course we go above and beyond to handle it but its a consolation prize if anything to the owners.

I personally diaged all of the issues myself and I feel confident in the diags.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Technician/Service Writer Dual Rolehttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9138-technicianservice-writer-dual-role/I was offered a job today. My service manager asked me if I would like to be a service writer AND a technician at the same time. I asked him, well how would that work?? His suggestion was to spend this amount of time in the shop, and this amount of time at the desk...."we will work some kind of schedule out." I have worked on cars for about 14 years now, I don't want to turn wrenches forever. I do want to move up in the world, and his suggestion was to get exposure in all areas of the service department. Has anyone done this before, or just any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Brian

MACS Convention 2013https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/8314-macs-convention-2013/The MACS (Mobile Air Conditioning Society convention was held in Orlando Florida this year. Big turn out as always. Each year I'm asked to write for their magazine (ACtion) and this year was no exception.

My coverage this year was on the heavy duty (Semi and RV) and Mining equipment section. I have a very strict word limit each year and this one was a toughy. 8 Instructors, 8 hours of classes and a 1200 word limit. Believe me, 1200 words goes fast. So I really...REALLY...had to nip this one down a lot.

Here's the link to the unedited version on my website. Read it and I sure would like to hear some feed back if you think there is enough "overview" of the subject lines in the article. (Friggin hard to put it all in... geez...these editors can make it tough on a guy)

BP Gas Problems, Kia van driving me nutshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/7730-bp-gas-problems-kia-van-driving-me-nuts/Gotta first say "hello" to everyone. I am new to the boards and have been in business for myself for roughly a year and a half. This site is a great resource for the "less experienced" shop owner like myself.

Now, to get on topic...

I have a 2003 Kia Sedona that the customer reported random stalls and mild engine knock/rattle on startup, as well as "funny" engine sounds. I myself did not hear the "rattle", but the engine ran poorly when I brought it in and sounded "gurgly". The customer requested a basic tuneup and diagnostic, which I agreed was a good place to start since it was VERY overdue for this kind of service anyway. When I pulled the plugs, they were so worn I was amazed they would still fire at all.

I finished the tuneup and re-fired the engine to check my work. After a few seconds, I was greeted with a loud rapping sound. I immediately shut it off and began going back through my work, making certain every bolt and nut were accounted for in case I had dropped something into the engine. Everything was present and accounted for, so I am very certain I did not drop anything into the motor. Then I discovered that Kia had issued a bulletin regarding parts of the variable intake system falling into the engine and causing loud noises and damage. After tearing down the upper intake, I discovered the intake butterlies were still intact, but the anti-rattle parts seem to be missing. Must have been loose already and became disloged inside the intake plenum while moving it around during the tune-up (I had tipped it over 90 degrees several times, but had not taken anything apart in the upper plenum at all). Sartup would have sucked it right into a cylinder. Ruh-roh...

I explained the situation with my customer and got the approval to dig deeper and find out the full extent of the problem. The customer at this point does not think I am at fault, but has hit his financial limit with this vehicle. It has 185k and nearly worn out already.

Now the quandry... The customer contacted me today and had discovered he had bought some of the faulty BP gas sold in Northern Indiana (as well as Chicago, Milwaukee, and parts of Ohio) shortly before bringing the vehicle in. The faulty gas has been rumored to cause loud knocking in some cases, but I cannot be sure because BP is keeping their mouths shut and just addressing the claims as they come in without acknowledging what the possible damages that could occur are.

I think this vehicle has had the "Kia intake problem" and the bad gas issue almost simultaneously. I'm afraid BP will reject his claim if they know other circumstances are involved, but I'm certain now that the original symptoms were most likely from the bad fuel and the rest has been a chain of misfortune for my customer. I really want to help this guy. He has been very patient and has even offered an apology for bringing in such a difficult vehicle!

My reputation is my livelyhood here, so any sage advice out there for a troubled newbie?
