<![CDATA[Automotive Shop Tools & Equipment Latest Topics]]>https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/forum/51-automotive-shop-tools-equipment/enAlignment Machine Jan 2024https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/19932-alignment-machine-jan-2024/ Hi folks. A quick search and I did not see any recent alignment machine posts. I have a quote from Hunter, $86,000 includes a scissor life and the concrete work to flush mount it, shipping, the machine with wall mount cameras. Some accessories. If I do conservatively 3 alignments a week my break even is approx 4.5 years, a bit longer depending on financing cost.

I lease my shop, and one of my biggest fears has been getting kicked out of here. Should I be looking at obtaining a location instead? I am always nervous about taking on the massive cost of a bigger building, especially when I struggle so often to hire good people. I talked to a friend that went from a small shop like I have to a larger facility and he said it was a lot more headaches with very little increase in income. I want less headaches, less stress.

Maybe it is my small shop that makes it hard to hire? Is this the right time to try to get a new location? How do I even start finding financing, I do not have a ton of cash saved up right now. Should I get the alignment machine now, and continue to save up for a new location? How much do I need down for a new spot? Should I keep my eye open for other shops that might fail in the coming year and hold off on the alignment machine and continue to stack cash? I am kind of tired of loosing an employee for 30 minutes to an hour to run an alignment across town that may or may not get done to the same quality standards I hold my employees to.

Sandblaster cabinethttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/20063-sandblaster-cabinet/ I've decided I need a smallish sandblaster cabinet for cleaning brake caliper brackets. I just sold my brake lathe that never got used to make room for it. If any of you have any advice before I make a purchase, I would love to hear it as I've never even used one. I'm not looking to go too cheap, I want it to work well and not be messy.

If anyone knows qualified, reasonable vendors, I would appreciate that.

there is NO rush.

New Alignment Machinehttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10292-new-alignment-machine/We are expanding to a new shop shortly and in the market for a new alignment machine. Any suggestions? We have always had Hunter machines, but the cost of a new top of the line machine is a little out of hand. Has anyone had any experience with the Atlas or John Bean machines? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

If you could buy one scan tool....which would it be?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/18032-if-you-could-buy-one-scan-toolwhich-would-it-be/ Many of us were once techs, but now hold the management role within our facilities - and as much as we'd love to say we're as technically proficient as we once were, the reality is technology is changing SO quickly that it's tough at times to stay on top of it!

Scan tools are being released at a dizzying pace, and the features required aren't what they were 5 years ago!

In this episode of the ASOG Podcast, David and I talk with Brandon Dills of Jarhead Diagnostics about just that!

Brandon shares his scan tool choices and what tool, if he could choose only one, that he would purchase!

We also talk some techncian perspective and there's even some dealer perspective in there!

Tablets for Digital Inspections - What are you using?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/17511-tablets-for-digital-inspections-what-are-you-using/ We are in the process of switching to a digital inspection system that will allow us to send customers a detailed vehicle report including pictures and videos. We're about to invest in tablets for our technicians, and I'm hoping some of you have already traveled this road and can lend some advice on which type of tablets to buy or not to buy. I'm leaning toward Samsung, but I've also heard good things about the Amazon Fire tablets. I'm open to all feedback, but I have absolutely no interest in buying Apple products. Their totalitarian attitude toward their hardware and software systems just doesn't jive with my free-market values.

Key Considerations:

 • Speed and functionality
 • Durability
 • Camera must have a flash
 • Low cost is a plus, but less important

Thanks in advance!

Interstate IB Pulse battery testerhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/15547-interstate-ib-pulse-battery-tester/ I currently have an Interstate ED-18 tester and Interstate recently released their “latest and greatest” IB Pulse tester. Very little independent information available concerning reviews of this new IB Pulse tester or comparisons to its predecessor, the ED-18. Does anyone have this new IB Pulse and how do you like it? Is it as good or better than the ED-18? After a VIN scan does the new IB Pulse tester preconfigure and load the testing specs like the old ED-18? Are starter draw and charging system tests adequate? Any information or comparisons would be appreciated.

We are a general repair shop servicing most anything, according to customer attitude. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

What tools have made a positive impact in your shop?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13718-what-tools-have-made-a-positive-impact-in-your-shop/ Hi there!

My name is Kiley and I write for "The Return" in Ratchet+Wrench magazine. (For those unfamiliar, 'The Return' is more of a personalized review that gives readers the chance to learn about how a product works inside a shop that uses it as well as the shop's review of the product.)

My question to you all today is this: what tool has made an impact in your shop? If someone was looking for a product to add to their shop, what would you recommend? (This can range from shop floor tools, security systems, management systems, payroll, etc.)

Thank you so much and have a great day!

Autel MaxiSys and MaxiSys mini, thoughts?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9277-autel-maxisys-and-maxisys-mini-thoughts/Just wondering if anyone on here has good experience with these units. We have manufacturer specific scan tools however we like to have a few general all purpose scanners available. We currently have the older Autel DS708 which is decent but rather slow. I also have a Launch GDS still in box brand new that I got for a pretty good price but I have yet to use it. One of my techs had experience using one and said in his words, "feels like a toy and crashes a lot." The new MaxiSys looks fast and capable. Anyone own one? Thoughts?

Lift for low carshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13575-lift-for-low-cars/ In the market for a new lift. Looking for something that will work well for low vehicles but can still handle light trucks. 2 post, clear floor 10k lbs capacity range. I see a lot of manufacturers offer a bi-symmetrical lifts now. I've never used one. Thoughts? What do you have and like? I had mohawk's for the last 20 years, exploring other brands. Not going to get full time shop usage. Looking for the best bang for the buck but not anything that isn't ALI certified.

What do you have that you like and can easily get sports cars on (a problem for my asymmetrical mohawk without blocks of wood to drive on)

Laser pointer on Wheel balancerhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13589-laser-pointer-on-wheel-balancer/ I have an older coats wheel balancer. Works great and is accurate. The problem is that on modern car 19-22" wheels it becomes really hard to eyeball the correct place on the wheel for the weight. Extra spins become common because the last weight was a few degrees off the mark. Newer balancers have laser pointers that make it easy. Has anyone retrofitted a pointer to their older balancer? Did you buy a kit or did you build something? I've done some searching but I can't find anyone that's done this before. I feel like it would be really handy.

Wheel Alignment liftshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9074-wheel-alignment-lifts/Our shop is being refitted with all new equipment.

Up for discussion is the choice of wheel alignment lifts.

The local distribution here in Hong Kong, has two brands on offer:

Hunter, who are well known and reputable, and Ravaglioli, who are well-represented, but

relatively unknown to me.

Does anyone here have any information to share on the pro's and cons of these two?

I've had mixed results with Italian equipment in the past, some good, some tragic.

Hoping to avoid any unnecessary shedding of tears, blood and cash.

Cheap Chinese Equipmenthttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13436-cheap-chinese-equipment/ Hello everyone, first post here,

I'm in the process of opening an actual shop, i've been a mobile mechanic for 10 years. I specialize in hybrid and electric vehicles. I've been searching prices on fluid exchanger machines, lifts and other pricey equipment. I've been looking at some really cheap Chinese equipment on ebay, i'm just wondering if anyone here has successfully used any of this equipment. It's tempting but I know the old "you get what you pay for" mantra. They got lifts for $1,600 and ATF fluid exchangers for $335. Might be worth trying the fluid exchanger on some of my own vehicles for that price. I appreciate any input, thank you!

I run a small repair shop.https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9482-i-run-a-small-repair-shop/Hello everybody!! First time posting here and its because i really need help. I run a small repair shop. so I was wondering if there is some reasonable priced car diagnostic tools that would be able to bring my garage into the 21st Century?

Recently, I am paying attention to some online shops, I found that there are a wide variety of automotive diagnostic products online, but I dare not to buy.

I know an online shop is plusobd.com (It is not advertising), i don't know it is reliable or not.

Is anyone who have bought automotive diagnostic products online?

Please share some experience or skills.

Thanks.

wiTECH , Micropod ll upgrade ?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13544-witech-micropod-ll-upgrade/ wiTech ,Micropod ll / Tech Authority : Shop focuses heavily on Computer/ Electrical work diagnostic and repair. Just received notice from AE Tools that I must upgrade in Jan. to a Micropod ll with serial # over WSP-31560. Hardware cost of 1,850.00 with license and subscription a special deal of 4,809.00. ($500 discount with bundle)

The Question: What are others doing with wiTECH ? The yearly cost after equipment seems way too high IDS, MDI ll have much better program cost. Are you using wiTech? Seems essential for solid diagnostic and programming on Chrysler vehicles. Does anyone have a source recommendation for wiTECH / Micropod ll offering a more reasonable cost?

I did look for discussions on diagnostic equipment, please point me in that direction if I've missed the topic.

Thanks,

Dedicated alignment lift or 2 post with stands?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10345-dedicated-alignment-lift-or-2-post-with-stands/Anyone using alignment stands on a 2 post lift? How are they for daily use?

I have a smaller shop with 2 techs and 3 bays, We have 2 lifts and 1 small "flat" bay. We are Japanese specialty shop that is growing and we were planning to add a new lift to the flat bay. The bay is not deep enough for a true 4 post alignment lift, so I was planning to purchase a new 2 post lift and add stands with an alignment machine in the near future. In searching for the right lift to be used with stands, I was just offered a used 2 post Hunter alignment rack that would fit in the bay for the same price as the 2 post with stands... and that really got me thinking...

We do an average of 25 cars a week on 2 makes and we are adding 3 more early this year (thus the need for another lift). We just started doing tires this past year and only sublet alignments when they are absolutely necessary. Our situation is pushing us towards needing an alignment machine in house, but we could use another lift for "over flow" just a much.

Knowing that we will be doing alignments out of necessity in the near future, I am leaning towards having a dedicated alignment lift. My questions are:

1. Does anyone regret purchasing their stands over an actual alignment lift?

2. Does anyone do "other" work on their alignment lift?

3. And how many alignments should I really expect?

If space were a major issue, what would you do?

(Drive-on alignment lift -OR- 2 post lift with alignment stands?)

Techs and Specialty Toolshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13493-techs-and-specialty-tools/ On going battle between my Manager and Tech staff. They like to look up about everything online before doing the work. When a RO says 'Specialty Tool' they think they need the tool to complete the work. For example, a recent 2009 Lincoln MKX had a RF axle seal leak. Pretty common problem. Tech doesn't want to do it without the tool kit. Took kit would cost more than the job.

We all have seen mechanics who can fix and think their way around an obstacle. I've got a shop full of parts hangers. Perhaps the Lincoln is better suited for a drive line shop or dealer but I figure we can figure it out and get it done like we've usually done. I've had Techs make their own tools and solutions and lately the younger guys just give up if they don't have YouTube instructions and specialty tools.

Thoughts?

Scanner shop tool or tech toolhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11593-scanner-shop-tool-or-tech-tool/I am not an auto shop owner. Originally signed up on here because I was considering starting my own shop. With that being said, should a tech buy his own scantool? We have 3 techs using 1 Verus Edge. Sometimes it can be aggravating having to wait on the verus. I do have a scanner that will read codes and view data but no bidirectional. Can't decide if I'm trying to talk myself into or out of spending $2k on a scantool. Part of me thinks if I'm going to be a serious diagnostician, I should have my own. But then I think a tool that costs that much plus the yearly updates should be a shop tool

Workbench/storage cabinethttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11226-workbenchstorage-cabinet/I'm looking to clean and organize the shop a little bit. Right now, we have to big, heavy duty, steel work benches. The problem is, it consistently gets covered with spare wd-40 cans, p/s fluid bottles, brake fluid bottles, glue, coolant jugs, etc, etc, you get the point. Underneath always has a jug of engine degreaser or some washer fluid. It's unsightly and I'd like to get it cleaned up.

The following are links to a workbench by the company 'Shure'. I'd love to have this since it has sliding cabinet doors on the bottom and a nice stainless steel top that should be easy to wipe clean. They even have some nice matching overhead cabinets. However, it comes a hefty price of $1,118... Does anybody have any suggestions for a cheaper alternative? Or ideas for where to look?

We won a Hunter Wheel Balancer at SEMA 2016!https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11180-we-won-a-hunter-wheel-balancer-at-sema-2016/Who else went to SEMA this year?! Last year we won some small tools from an OTC diagnostics competition and this year, we won a free Hunter SmartWeight Wheel Balancer (even though not the road force, its a huge upgrade for us). All you had to do is post a photo on Instagram and use their hashtag. I think they have this competition every year.

Jump Box / Booster Packhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10698-jump-box-booster-pack/Our shop jump box is getting to where if it is not left plugged in every night, you've got a 50/50 chance of jumping off a car with a dead battery. It's probably about 6 years old or so, so I'm thinking it might be time to replace it. I've checked out the tool flyers and I've started seeing these new, smaller jump boxes that claim to do just as good of a job as the bigger/heavier/bulkier jump boxes. Does anyone have any feedback on these? I know snap-on had one in their flyer, but I can't find the link for it. I'll link to one similar for reference.

Ford IDS/VCMhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10577-ford-idsvcm/Hey Guys,

Looking at purchasing the Ford IDS. I'm already familiar with the Tech2win that GM uses. I'm just not real sure about the IDS. Do you just buy the hardware and have a year long subscription you log into to use the program? Or do you buy the software also and pay for updates? Just want to make sure what I'm getting into before I make that leap.

Any tire dealers using Bosch equipment?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10559-any-tire-dealers-using-bosch-equipment/Good day everybody.

Do any of the tire dealers here, particularly the higher volume shops, have any experience with Bosch equipment?

We deal with passenger and light truck tires up to 30" in diameter and currently have one Hunter and three Coats tire changers. Our oldest Coats changer is due for replacement and as I am highly disappointed with the Coats 70X EH3 I purchased last year I will probably purchase another Hunter this time, but I would love to hear some opinions on Bosch equipment before I make my purchase.

We install an average of 42 tires per day so speed is important, but the changers ability to protect the tire and wheel assembly from any sort of damage when working with the more difficult run-flat tires, reversed wheels, etc is the number one priority.

Thank you in advance for anyone that has any feedback to offer.

Asian import diagnostic equipmenthttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10536-asian-import-diagnostic-equipment/For the past 3 years, my shop has been an exclusive Toyota/Lexus/Scion shop. Over the last 6 months, I've added Honda/Acura branding to our website and our signage and have slowly started to inform customers that have honda/acura vehicles that we now service them also. I'm getting ready to send out mailers to Honda/Acura owners and I'm toying around with adding Nissan/Infiniti.

My question is, as I really start to attract more of these vehicles, does anyone have a suggestion for a scan tool? We have the factory Toyota/Lexus scan tool right now and a generic matco scanner. Does anyone have any insight on factory honda or nissan scanners? Or maybe a generic scanner that focuses more on these makes/models?

MAC Scan Tool?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10467-mac-scan-tool/Hi all. Friend of mine runs a local shop. He is considering purchasing a new Scan Tool.

MAC Rep. is trying to get him to purchase a new ETX431TAB10. Standard pitch, sale on through Wednesday.

Anyone have opinions?

He runs a small shop and wants something good that is updatable, but does not want to waste money on expensive options that are not really needed.
