Tire priceshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13660-tire-prices/ I'm finding the more I look into tire prices from box stores the more embarrassing my tire prices become. In the past month or so I've found tires for sale at Wal-mart, Discount Tire, and Fleet Farm cheaper than I can buy them. Have any of you ran into this? If so does your supplier match prices and make it so you can profit a bit?

The other shoe [or tire] has droppedhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13688-the-other-shoe-or-tire-has-dropped/ Well the other shoe has dropped in the ATD / Tire Hub saga. Bridgestone has announced they are following Goodyear in pulling their Brands from ATD. This one hurts as I have been a loyal Bridgestone dealer for decades. Looks like I have 3 options, none good. Continue with ATD but buy my Bridgestone products from Tire Hub. Continue with ATD and drop my Bridgestone products probably increasing my Continental purchases. Find a whole new distributor to buy all my products from. The thing that really sucks is ATD, Bridgestone, and Tire pros all announced new loyalty programs this year which collectively could have amounted to 18k more in back end $$s. Most of that is probably gone now.

TIRE ROTATIONShttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13659-tire-rotations/ I wanted to ask a question that no one can give me straight answer on. I  know in the past on any normal vehicle when you rotated the tires you wanted the best tires in the front (I'm talking about lets say a Ford Taurus). Several years ago I see the Michelin video where they put two Ford Taurus's side by side with one vehicle having the new tires in the front and the other vehicle having the new tires installed on the rear. Per the NHTSA they state accidents occur or loss of control mainly begins with the rear end losing control therefore you want to have your best tires on the rear? So with all the experts out there and I've also asked many other owners what they think but mainly I'm still seeing "best tires in the front". What are your thoughts? Thanks guys. I'm excited that I found this site!

Anyone have a dealer license to compensate for slow times?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11290-anyone-have-a-dealer-license-to-compensate-for-slow-times/I've been lucky so far but I couldn't escape the "slow" season forever. I'm in NC and we got 2 inches of snow and the whole city/county shut down for days.....

We got snow Saturday, had pretty much no customers Friday, Sat (closed) Monday and today and tomorrow doesn't look good either (no appointments).

Techs are getting frustrated with no work (they are flat rate and usually stay busy) and obviously not good for me or the business. Do you guys go to auction and buy cars to sell? I usually have 1 car that I work on at all times for myself to sell but I haven't bought a car off of a customer in a while.

It's a bit of a pain to get a dealer license here so wondering if you guys do it

What scanners do you use to scan\flash TPMS sensors and how much do you charge?

Tire wholesalehttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10953-tire-wholesale/So right now we currently use townfair tire as our wholesale tire supplier. I contacted tirerack and set up a wholesale account and the prices are so much cheaper. I can get the same exact tire shipped to me with all costs for about 25 dollars cheaper a tire. Does anyone else use tirerack ? I'm just wondering if I should be bringing this up to my wholesale contact at townfair and seeing if he could change my pricing or what not. How are people competing in the tire market? i just can't seem to get good pricing on them.

It Finally Happened At My Shop Yesterday.https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10599-it-finally-happened-at-my-shop-yesterday/I get notification from Tire Rack about a customer that had dropped shipped a set of ires to my shop. I noticed the size and price they paid,I could tell they were inexpensive and closeout tires. Young lady come in , very nice, and says , do I have to pay to have tires mounted. I have been a TR installer since 1992 with very positive outcome and great reviews. This was a first for me!!! I am a Price Pledge installer for TR , the pricing is on the website so I run a ticket for the whole works OTD. She looks astonished, she gets on phone and calls, I guess her dad, she puts this guy on the phone and bam, he starts freaking out about the price, I say sir look at the website it gives you the price, I was calm at first then I tell him sir there are 10 places to go too why did you choose me. Then it got ugly. He really thought there was no charge anyway it ended with me slamming the phone up on this craaaazy guy. I am calling TR today. That may wrap up a good thing and relationship with TR. I really think that this will be what is to come in the mail order business. A lot of people just do not get it. When they have to take their car back to a franchise dealer they will understand what is happening in this quickly changing business. I have been thinking about getting out of TR network. I think this just made my mind up for me. What was good thing 20 years ago is not good today. Times are a changing my friends. I felt a little sorry for the young lady , she was in the military , I was about to give a 20% discount that I do not advertise . She said my dad has a bad temper , and apologized. I am sure I get a review from hell about this. I will be waiting on this one.

Stocking Tires?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10494-stocking-tires/Was wondering if it is worth to stock tires? Seems like with all the sizes would be a tremendous outlay of money but sometimes the big box stores like Pep Boys, Mavis, STS etc.. are hard to compete with because they stock the tires and sometimes it could take me hours to get the tires from the supplier.

Thoughts?

Selling Tire Road Hazard Warranty on an AWD or 4Wdhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10224-selling-tire-road-hazard-warranty-on-an-awd-or-4wd/I am thinking of selling Road Hazard Warranties to my customers.

The problem I am having with this program ( TechNet has a great program) is having my Advisors selling a Road Hazard warranty and seeing that 80% of the vehicles we service are AWD or 4WD, I don't feel comfortable selling the warranty when 9 times out of 10 , the other 3 tires will have to be replaced ( depending on tread depth ).

I researched this great site and the web in general and I don't see anyone discussing this.

Of course honesty and integrity comes into play here and I don't feel comfortable selling something that looks deceitful from the customers point of view if they ever have an issue with a tire that is covered by the Road Hazard warranty and then telling them that we will cover the one tire but because they are driving a Subie ( we service ALOT of Subies ) we will have to charge them for the other 3 tires because there is more than 2/32 difference in tread depth between the new tire and the other 3 tires.

We could inform the customer of this when selling the Road Hazard warranty, but would you buy a Road Hazard warranty when it only covers the one tire that is damaged, knowing you will probably have pay to replace the other 3 tires ?

Also, after my Advisors take the time to explain the whole tire circumference thing and how it could cause drivetrain damage, etc., chances are customers will just be confused and that wont help trying to upsell the Road Hazard warranty or for that matter the whole customer experience when purchasing tires.

Tire shaving is not available any where in Colorado that I have found after extensive research.

Its a lost art except for competitive racers at dirt or asphalt tracks, which Colorado has maybe a total of 5 tracks that I can think of.

Tire rack does it but they don't sell Cooper tires ( which is what we sell the most of ).

A little Quagmire going on here ?

Purchasing a new tire shaving machine ( $10k for a quality one ) would resolve this quagmire and could be a profit center all by itself if marketed correctly, seeing as no one in Denver ( we are 45 minutes from downtown, 20 minutes from the western suburbs ) is offering this service.

Any input from you great folks would be appreciated.

Thank you , Mike.

Customer Supplied Tires?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10177-customer-supplied-tires/I offer tire services as a convenience. I mark up my tires 10%-20% plus mounting/balancing. I'm a shop that does not work with customer supplied parts. What about customer supplied tires?

Starting to sell tires and looking for advice.https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10036-starting-to-sell-tires-and-looking-for-advice/I am starting to sell tires. I picked up a new changer and balancer. I have valve stems, weights, patches and glues, lube and a scuffer for the rims. We have 4 lifts total, two techs. I am looking for any advice anyone has to give.

Right now my biggest questions are how much to mark up and how can i offer road hazard. Right now I am using US Auto Force as a supplier for my tires. The prices seem very good, but they do not offer a tire protection program that I am aware of. For pricing I would like to be at or a little above the dicount big boys like Big O and dicount tires. I dont want to get slammed with non stop tire work, but I also dont want to appear to be price gouging and start pissing off customers.

Also are there any special laws to folow. Do I need to log the serials in the computer? Does anyone use Alldata and is there a special set up in it for tires?

Thanks in advance guys, let me know if I am failing to ask the important questions.

BEST 2 TIRES ON THE REARhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9813-best-2-tires-on-the-rear/I find that many of the smaller shops I wholesale tires to are not putting the best 2 tires on the rear. When they only install 2 tires. This also includes doing tire rotations the best tires need to stay on the rear as well. I'm curious to know how many of you are unaware of this?

The reasoning for this is that you have the weight of the engine on the front 2 tires for traction, and hardly any weight on the rear therefore you want the tires with the best traction in the rear. The way I sell this to the customer is by telling them when you see a car in the ditch what way normally goes in first the rear. This is because of the lack of traction in the rear and the rear end is trying to pass you up in slippery or wet conditions. After I explain it that way. The customer normally gives up on insisting the new tires go on the front. And most of the time they will go with 4 new tires instead of 2.

I do remember a video Michelin had on this. I think if you searched best tires on rear you could find it. In fact I remember Michelin and a tire dealership getting sued after a accident after the dealership put 2 new tires on the front.

Free tire rotationshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9298-free-tire-rotations/I would like to hear how others are selling tire rotation services when places such as 'Discount Tire' and others offer free tire rotations when you buy tires from them? I try to sell a tire rotation every 5,000 miles with their oil change, and offer at '5K mile service' which includes the oil change, tire rotation, and vehicle inspection(measure tires, brakes, test battery, fluids, etc.) and stamping their maintenance book. 75% of the time I get the response 'Oh, I get my tires rotated for free down at [insert business name here]. How much for just the oil change?'

How are you guys competing with this? Is it just my inexperience with making sales? Should I press on and mention 'you wont have to wait in line' or 'we already have it on lift, are you sure?' I don't want to come across as a pushy salesman, but it's really starting to get under my skin.

UPDATE: I just phone shopped one of these chain stores locally and they told me they offer free lifetime tire rotation AND spin balance! Is there this much profit in tire sales?

Does a shop have to do tires?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9354-does-a-shop-have-to-do-tires/Greetings looking for feedback on tires and associated equipment. A shop I am in negotiations to purchase doesn't have any tire mounting or balancing machines or alignment for that matter. The owner claims that due to the big tire chain store in town he feels it is a loosing proposition. The chain store does a lot of free work. I was wondering what others have to say? I wasn't necessarily looking to start selling tires but being able to mount and balance seems like a positive thing. I could see being able to do winter tire switch overs and balancing as ways to get a ROI

Used tire buyer in NY?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/9011-used-tire-buyer-in-ny/Effective waste processing is a vital part of our industry. We recycle, resell or reuse almost everything that comes out of our shop. Waste tires is one item that we haven't found a good way to process. We have taken a new approach to tire sales in the last year and signed with Yokohama as a dealer, new pricing allows us to be competitive with discounters and still make money, which has seen our tires sales nearly double, hence a lot more scraps to process. Currently one of our major tire supplies will take a scrap tire for every new tire delivered. So will another supplier that we use infrequently. Our largest supplies does not and we end up with large amounts of tires that we need to pay in order to dispose of. I know there is a large market for tire scrap and good tire carcasses, we have been unable to find a buyer in our area. There is a local used tire guy that will buy our reusable tires, but that is a very small amount of what we produce.
So who will buy scrap tires in/near the Hudson Valley, roughly 100 tires per load, before we run out of room.

Used Tireshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/7516-used-tires/I recently picked up a tire machine and I am getting a balancer as well. In my area, we have a market of customers looking for used tires, I get asked weekly. I currently don't do ANY tires, but I am strongly considering stocking common sized used tires for older vehicles as these seem to be the customers generally asking for them. I believe it would also be a great opportunity to do brake & front end inspections while the tires are off the vehicle and upsell needed repairs.

Do any owners sell used tires and what are your sources for obtaining them (recyclers, resellers).

Tire fee'shttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/7989-tire-fees/So I got an email not too long ago from our tire distributor stating this:

As you know, President Obama signed a three-year tariff on China-made consumer tires back in 2009. The duties were in addition to the base 4% tariff which has been in place for years. The three-year tariff went into effect on September 26, 2009 and has now expired.

As of September 27th of this year, any products not already processed by customs are no longer subject to the tariffs imposed by the Obama administration. This change will undoubtedly cause some disruption in the market prices for Chinese import tires over the coming weeks. In addition, this event could have an impact on pricing other product lines and price tiers.

In light of the tariff expiration, distributors like ourselves have been forced to review and make modifications to our return policies. As a result, effective today, new returns on all Chinese imported tires will be credited at the lesser of price paid or current selling price.

If you have any questions, please contact your *** representative in your local distribution center. On behalf of everyone at ****, thank you for your understanding of this policy change, in the face of this unusual industry situation, and thank you for your business.

Soooo today I was quoting tires and on top of a NTF (New Tire Fee) that I have to charge customers, a FET fee came up on a certain types of tires, that I had never seen before, so I asked and it meant a Federal Excise Tax, which is understandable as tires come from out of the states but how did I never come across that before? Can someone explain all of this to me in laymans terms?? I know there are a lot of pros and cons to obamas tire tariff, but how does this affect us in our industry? So many fees and taxes, and how do I cover myself with all these fees?

Anyone else know about this whole Obama ordeal, I had never heard of it until I got the email from my tire distributor....
