Dealerships going mobilehttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/15784-dealerships-going-mobile/ Last week a sales rep from a local Mercedes parts department stopped in to see me. He has been to my location several times in the past, always polite and professional. He handed me a paper with several topics highlighted such as extended parts dept. business hours during the week, Saturday hours, on-line ordering and mobile diagnostics. He provided additional information about each topic but the item that concerned me was mobile diagnostics. He explained that today’s vehicles are so complex that in many cases they require proprietary OEM equipment, information and training to efficiently repair them which they can provide, for a fee, at my location. He went on to tell me that they are equipping two vehicles, one vehicle for diagnostics and the other vehicle equipped with a compressor, tire machine and balancer. Whoa.... now he lost me, we need assistance replacing tires? Seems to me this mobile task force is NOT our friend but instead our foe, a wolf in sheep’s clothing. They are gearing up to provide mobile repairs in my area at my customers homes and work places, not good. I expressed my concern and he quickly informed me that everyone else that he had presented this concept to were very pleased to be able to receive assistance (for a fee) when needed and did not look at this as competition. This dealership is owned by Lithia, one of the top ten largest dealers in America. I doubt if we, the local independent repair community, could keep two mobile repair vehicles busy enough to warrant their existence. Fine, they are willing to “help” me (for a fee) with problem jobs at my location but I feel they are clearly after my customers. What are your thoughts? Are there any dealers in your area also offering this same service?

The "Uber" Of Auto Repair Is Coming! How Do We Stop It?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10237-the-uber-of-auto-repair-is-coming-how-do-we-stop-it/Like it isn't hard enough to be a shop owner! A start up company "Otobots" has allocated funds to start "yourmechanic.com."

As a shop owner I disapprove of a company like this, we run honest businesses, and this company is trying to cut our throats! How can we unite and take a stand??

The link to the artical I came across. http://www.dailydot.com/technology/otobots-uber-car-repair-on-demand/

Today I visited 6 different shopshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11645-today-i-visited-6-different-shops/Today I visited 6 different automotive shops. NTB, Firestone, Meineke, Discount Tire, Jiffy Lube, and Mr Tire- they were all within 2 miles of my new shop.

It's amazing what they are willing to share with you. Meineke was a private owner since its a franchise. Everything else was corporate.

There's a difference when the owner is running the shop and hired help is.

Doesn't matter how much you pay, owner is friendlier.

Discount Tire will be here for a while. Excellent people and policies. Did you guys know that they patch tires for free??? Even if you didn't buy tires from them! Same thing with rotations! I asked them why????? and HOW??? they just laughed.

I want to know CarMax's Proprietary Secretshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11797-i-want-to-know-carmaxs-proprietary-secrets/ I visited a CarMax today, wanting to see their shop floor.   About a year ago, they switched from epoxy flooring to polished concrete.    So, in speaking with the Shop Manager, I was told that he would not let me into their shop because it was filled with their proprietary secrets.   However, he was gracious enough to answer all of my questions regarding his year old flooring.    At the end, I asked if I could just peek in to see the floor without looking at the goodies and it was a firm no.    So, now, Inquiring Minds want to know.  "Show me what you got!"   I can't imagine anything in their shop that needs to be kept secret.   Anyone seen the goodies?

Is AAA your Competition?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/4083-is-aaa-your-competition/AAA in our area has, for the last couple of yours been running battery replacement trucks in addition to the normal towing vehicles. I stated my displeasure with this program to my AAA representative when I was participating in the AAA Approved Auto Repair program and using them as my towing service. Since I have ceased participation in the program, my tow in rate has more than doubled.

I was reading a recent issue of Brake and Front End magazine today and got to wondering if those of you who are still involved with AAA are as alarmed as I am even though I am a former participant? According to the editorial AAA has purchased a 30 something location, auto repair franchise, operating in several states in the Midwestern and Eastern United States.

My concern is this, when I was a AAA Approved shop I advertised, as I'm sure most of you do, The AAA logo in all of my print advertising, on my radio advertising and even my Yellow Pages ads. Heck, I even allowed them to hang their sign on my pole and building. All of those years I paid dues to belong to and advertised for an organization that is now a direct competitor.

Yeah, I may just be venting but really would like to know what you all think?

how do i compete with mobile/backyard mechanics?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/7522-how-do-i-compete-with-mobilebackyard-mechanics/I'm sure everyone has had to deal with this so hopefully I can get some advice. How do you compete with these mobile & backyard mechanics. I've been losing so many jobs to them just simply because I can't compete with their prices. Example- a customer called asking for an estimate on replacing his motor on a 1998 cadillac deville. After finding a low mileage used motor with a decent warranty I gave him a price of $2000. He seemed very happy with it and would call me the next day to let me know. He called back a few days later saying he found someone who would do it for $900 and demanded I match his price. After a bit of questioning i found out his other price would be doing it in his backyard, and has never done a northstar motor swap(the subframe, motor, trans has to come out at the same time) I told him I couldn't even get close to it and he went with the cheaper price. So i lost the job. This is almost a daily happening from almost every call I get. How do I get people to see past the ridcliously low price that these backyarders can give and go with a quality repair at a decent price???

Goodyear closing 92 Stores and will Cut 600 Jobs?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/1778-goodyear-closing-92-stores-and-will-cut-600-jobs/Goodyear closing 92 Stores and will Cut 600 Jobs? Did anyone hear about this? They must be struggling.

"Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. announced that they will be closing down 92 of their retail stores across the United States. They will be laying off 600 full and part time workers due to the slow economy. Goodyear has a total of 742 stores in the United States.

The spokesperson for the company said that because of the economy, people are driving less and it has affected how often they are replacing tires and buying new cars. They are planning on closing stores that are under performing.

The company has reported income increases in the second quarter to $75 million which the year before was $56 million. Their revenue also rose by 6.5 percent to $5.24 billion."
