I got a bunch of engine and cabin filters - leftovers from my store. What's the best way to get rid off the inventory? eBay sales are slow and not an option due to the time it takes to list a filter and due to expensive cost of shipping.

Many thanks in advance,

Mike

Brand Choise Washer Fluidhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/18551-brand-choise-washer-fluid/ He folks, hope everyone is doing well.

I run a quality focused shop. I am coming due on a new 55 gallon drum of washer fluid. I have two choices, Rain X or Krystal Clear.

Can anyone tell me if they saw a good reason to go with the Rain X over the Krystal Clear. I do not want to buy a name brand if there is not a clear improvement over the generic.

Parts Shortageshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/18428-parts-shortages/ Anybody seeing shortages? I haven't been able to get hose clamps for 2 months now. Today I tried to order 0w20 and 2 vendors were out and said it would take 4-6 weeks to get. 2 weeks ago I tried to order rotors for an F150 and there wasn't a single vendor that had a set of 2. I had to special order them from a warehouse in Texas.

Seems like some areas are seeing this before others. Maybe we should keep a list of what's happening so we can get early warning on it.

National Pronto Association, Automotive Distribution Network Announce Mergerhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/17312-national-pronto-association-automotive-distribution-network-announce-merger/ https://www.aftermarketnews.com/national-pronto-association-automotive-distribution-network-announce-merger/The leadership of National Pronto Association and Automotive Distribution Network announced today the merger of the two organizations. As of Jan. 1, 2021, the newly formed organization will be known as the Pronto Automotive Distribution Network.

Headquartered in Grapevine, Texas, Pronto Automotive Distribution Network will be led by Robert Roos as president and David Prater as executive vice president. The combined organization will represent more than 250 members in North America with an estimated revenue of approximately $5 billion annually. Members will continue to market under the Pronto, Parts Plus and Auto Pride names.

In addition, Pronto Automotive Distribution Network, together with Federated Auto Parts, will comprise the Automotive Parts Services Group (The Group).

“Pronto members and staff are excited to partner with the Network team. The similarities between our two groups are significant, making the transition into one company a much easier path,” said Roos. “This merger will benefit Network and Pronto members, as well as our valued vendor partners, by increasing our membership footprint throughout North America and helping to ensure our collective future viability. In addition, the merger will enhance our position within The Group, working alongside our partners at Federated. I can’t think of a better way to start off the new year.”

“By forming the Pronto Automotive Distribution Network, we will have the ability to build on past success, make a greater impact in the marketplace, and identify more ways to benefit our members, supplier partners and associates,” added Prater. “Because the aftermarket is always evolving, taking this proactive step and merging two of the major program groups will help ensure our combined membership is well positioned to compete and achieve mutual success well into the future.”

<![CDATA[Moog Hub/Bearing proprietary WS Sensors & studs]]>https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/15797-moog-hubbearing-proprietary-ws-sensors-studs/ After a road testing for a customer's complaint of "Intermittent odd feeling when braking" we identified it as an intermittent false ABS stop. Not unusual for a late model GM truck. We identified the L/F wheel speed sensor dropping out at lower speeds and ordered a wheel speed sensor. I remembered that we had replaced the L/F hub/bearing about two years ago with a Moog hub/bearing assembly which concerned me. The new wheel speed sensor arrived in a tattered, taped up box and would not fit, the sensor tip was contacting the tone ring. The part was re-ordered in a different brand (OEM this round) and we were disappointed again, still improper fit. I then called Moog Tech Support and found out that if an ABS WSS fails on a Moog hub/bearing it can't be replaced. Moog uses a proprietary WSS and is unable to be sourced separate from the hub/bearing. I confirmed with tech support that this is the case for all Moog hub/bearings that include a WSS and NOT isolated to the vehicle that we were working on. To add to this issue I also found out that ALL Moog hub/bearings have proprietary wheel studs so if a stud strips or is damaged on a replacement Moog hub/bearing you have a major problem because the hub/bearing will need to be replaced, studs alone are NOT available. I tried to contact Timken and BCA to see if their hub/bearings are the same as Moog in regard to proprietary WSS's and wheel studs but neither answered my email request for assistance. All of this is news to me, maybe because we use quite a bit of OEM parts but I thought I should pass it on since it will make me think twice before ordering a Moog hub/bearing.

Broken Partshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13771-broken-parts/ Are you guys charging your techs for parts they break? In the past we have never made our techs pay for something they broke, the shop did and talked to the tech about what they need to do to prevent this in the future. It's getting old though. 2 weeks ago one young tech back a mirror into a pole so we bought a new mirror. This week, a different tech while removing a fuel tank, didn't discount the fuel lines on top first and ended up dropping the tank too fast and broke the fuel sending unit. On this truck that is a $300+ part that we are now eating on a $500 ticket. I want to tell the tech he is responsible, and will have to pay the shop back for the part. What say you?

Just curious how you guys deal with this problem or if it in fact a problem? Thanks in advance, Scott

GM Dealer Parts Warranty??? What Would You Do???https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13755-gm-dealer-parts-warranty-what-would-you-do/ Is there a way to get GM to pay labor warranty? I have a customer's 2005 Chevrolet SSR 6.0L Automatic. Oil pan threads were stripped and we got a new oil pan from local Chevrolet dealer (very pricey) and labor intensive. When I got the oil pan new in the box, it had metal shavings from the casting marks to which we cleaned out and it was fine. We installed the oil pan and after putting some mileage on it, we noticed oil on the ground. After lifting it up we discovered that the oil pan has factory casting marks and oil was literally seeping through the bottom of the pan through the casting mark. The tech is not happy, I am not happy and I'm about to call the customer to tell them the news so they won't be happy paying for more rental car time.

I called the parts department from the dealer that I purchased from and told them what happened and they can exchange the pan but they don't pay labor. Very frustrating cause of the labor involved and the customer who had a rental car for about a week now and already turned it in today thinking she was getting her car? Is there a way to get labor reimbursement? I already tried the GM 800 number and filed a complaint and they said it would be about 2 business days or whatever before I get a call back from a rep. Does anybody know how to find a local GM rep to come see their crappy product?

Aftermarket Parts Issues Driving Me Up A Wall!!!https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13702-aftermarket-parts-issues-driving-me-up-a-wall/ There are days I want to set the place on fire (sometimes just customers cars) ok just kidding. I seem to be getting a streak of problematic parts lately. I am so tired of reps telling me about quality, oem specs, warranty blah blah. My main supplier is AAP. Here are some examples below.

- 2000 wrangler needing rear axles due to bearing failure. Ordered Dorman axles and both had fitment issues where once installed the differential pin wouldn't fit in due to improper clearances on the axle. Ordered another brand online Yukon Axles.

- 1995 Lexus SC300 (mint cond, low miles) Felpro valve cover gasket was manufactured too thick and didn't fit in the groove on the valve cover. Ordered from Lexus and fit fine.

- Forgot the year (Chrysler van) water pump with a pulley that wobbled and even the online reviews had the same issue.

- 1993 Wrangler water pump machined incorrectly where once bolted to the block, the ears of the pump where the ps pump bracket bolts to was not machined correctly and if you tried to bolt it on it would bend the water pump. Ordered AC Delco (i think) from Cold air distributors and worked fine.

- 1999 Lexus ES300 front left brake hose manufactured incorrectly. Ordered another brand, probably Raybestos from Cold Air Distributors, and all is well.

- 2003 Taurus 3.0 OHV timing cover from Dorman 635-117. Online reviews had some issues but the oem unit was expensive. I ordered 3 before I found one that was machined good enough then installed. Came back a while later leaking. I ordered a replacement under warranty and the quality control was horrible. Just ended up getting the ford one and looked and seemed to work great. Time will tell

- 2005 Honda Element Monroe struts all the way around (these are the ones) in the front like the civics where the strut has the bracket where the tie rod bolts to. Left front was fine. Right front couldn't get aligned properly as the bracket for the tie rod was welded on at the wrong angle. Went through a couple from the local parts store then I think Monroe sent me a strut that was tested to be ok on their manufacturing/ quality control/ measurement jig and it still failed. They paid to have the old Honda part sent back for inspection. I think i ordered KYB for the front and all was well.

I use the AAP Wearever Platinum which have been great brake pad material and braking, but lately they don't fit properly and I have taken video to show the reps and I believe when the backing plate is cut, there are imperfections where it wont fit into the caliper bracket without me grinding the backing plate on the edges. The actual manufacturing company for them sent a rep to a local AAP BBQ event and I talked to him and he is very aware and they supposedly changed the manufacturing process to address this issue but recently I did a brake job and had the same issue then installed Akebono and all was well. I am considering switching to the Wagner TQ which they stock as well. They give me an across the board pricing on the Platinum pads of $34.99 on most vehicles. Has anybody got a good pricing structure on the Wagners?

AAP gives a 3 month parts and labor warranty on pretty much everything they sell. The labor is reimbursed on my parts account at 1/2 my shop labor rate times the book time. The problem is I still have to write up an invoice showing that I replaced the part and didn't charge the customer, and spend time calling their hotline and explain what happened, then fax or scan and email the original invoice, warranty invoice, original parts invoice with the claim numbers and I still have to call and check in to make sure the claims have been processed and paid out. This takes time and is not very encouraging. Otherwise the parts themselves have the standard warranties, 2 year, 3 year, lifetime, etc. though this still requires me to redo the repair that should have been successful the first time.

I am the owner and mechanic and I waste so much time in the office dealing with parts, Calling manufacturers tech support lines, taking measurements, sending pictures of parts problems. Then if I cannot get it resolved having to research another part. The Dorman timing covers were terrible. the metal was porous and i sent them a screenshot of their website talking about "High quality plastic or metal construction resists warping, cracking and porousness". I am surprised that these companies don't look at the reviews of their own products and correct the issues. I do need another technician so I don't have to wear so many hats but in the meantime how do you folks deal with these types of issues.

The other issue is because I am not a high volume purchaser, although it is getting better as I grow, I have to purchase the majority of my parts from AAP to keep myself on a reasonable tier level. If I spread my purchases around then I can fall off the tier level in a short time. I like AAP and they have a warehouse near me and have a vast inventory available locally as opposed to other suppliers. Most of the stuff I get is name brand stuff to avoid junk parts. I like Moog, National, Motorcraft, Delco, Etc so its not like I am trying to be cheap on everything, I just seem to get burned a lot. When the commercial reps come by, it is usually to check up on business and try to sell me something or a service or a package deal, however when I show them the issues I am having, they really don't or cannot do anything other than listen and tell me about their "quality parts". I ask for the numbers to the engineering departments to try and at least get some of these issues resolved and I cannot get through.

How do ya'll deal with these situations?

Mas, Mevotech, Proforged. Anybody Using them?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13720-mas-mevotech-proforged-anybody-using-them/ Mas and Mevotech have videos and stuff regarding their regular line and premium lines. Proforged seems to be listed as premium or heavy duty in the rockauto categories. When I look at Amazon for some ratings I cannot seem to find anything objective. I try to use Moog exclusively on steering and suspension parts but sometimes a tie rod or stabilizer link is excessively prices. I have seen the mevotech stuff on amazon with bad reviews that they only last a year or so or the boots get torn maybe due to cheap materiels. The scary thing is Dorman acquired Mas industries January of 2018 and Dorman's quality has fallen dramatically.

Whats your thoughts?

<![CDATA[Oil vendors & pricing?]]>https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/13580-oil-vendors-pricing/ Who and where does everybody get oil from, and what are you paying around the country?

I'm still somewhat small and don't use tons of oil. I was buying single quarts and 5-quart jugs, and still do for some things. Have started getting 6-gal boxes of Mercon V from Worldpac, and 20l jugs of Motul 5W-40. The rest has typically been able to be filled in with great oil sales that I find at the parts stores. Typically spend ~$1k or more every christmas at Autozone scooping up all of the $2/qt synthetic or syn blends or HM oils on clearance.

Where do you buy? Do you have price limits, while still trying to maintain quality?? For generic synthetics, $3.00/qt is where I try to stay under, but will sometimes grab some of the Napa syn when it's on sale ($3.49/qt lately) if I'm running low on something. $2/qt max for conventional or blend/high mileage. I stock Motul 5W-40 for most of the euro stuff that we work on, and thats obviously a bit more, and those oil changes are of course priced accordingly. The deals are getting harder to find though, and I have a supplier that stopped by the other day with a flyer for decent case pricing, but requires buying 20 cases. Figured before I dump money on that I'd check and see what others are doing. I also like the boxes, I'd love to get one of the racks to store them all on too, saves a ton of space and so much less waste in plastic.

FWIW - I contacted Valvoline about bulk purchased, but never heard back. So they're most likely out....

Worldpac pricing fluctuations?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/12741-worldpac-pricing-fluctuations/ Does anybody notice that as soona s you buy something from Worldpac, the price on that items seems to go up a bit? I'm starting to notice the trend, and it's annoying. Had this happen on a particular coolant I use often in particular. It was typically $14-$16/gallon, then jumped to $20. Called my rep, he 'let' me buy 3 cases @ $16/gallon, and said the price was going up. Next time I looked in SpeedDial, the price was back down to around $16 again. What gives? How can I combat this?

Rainguard Wiper Bladeshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11362-rainguard-wiper-blades/Hello Everyone,

Does anyone have any experience in installing Rainguard wiper blades and as to their quality? They say they are made by Trico, but that doesn't mean much if the quality isn't good.

I'm thinking about getting a large stock of them.

Thanks in advance

Engine oil - Case goods, bulk or "bag-in-box"?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11342-engine-oil-case-goods-bulk-or-bag-in-box/I presently have one bulk oil tank that is dispensed from an overhead reel in the shop and we use case goods for all other needs. The bulk oil route was great years ago but late model vehicles require so many different oils that most of my volume is now from case goods. Bulk oil is probably still the best route for dealers that primarily use one grade of oil however it no longer meets my needs since I have limited space and I am unable to have multiple bulk tanks. I recently investigated "bag-in-box" rack systems. For those of you who are unfamiliar, "bag-in-box" is 6 gallons of oil in a cardboard box with a plastic bag "bladder" that has a spigot. The 6 gallon boxes are stored on a rack that has graduated pitchers under each box. Open a spigot, fill the pitcher to the desired amount, pour the pitcher into the engine. No large bulk tank, no pump, no piping, no overhead reel. The size of the 6 gallon box (24 qts) is about the same size as a regular case of oil (12 qts). I had a meeting with a sales rep from GH Berlin Windward yesterday. They offer "bag-in-box" rack systems from Kendall, Valvoline, Mobil, Chevron, Peak and Navi-guard (house brand).

Are any of you using a "bag-in-box" rack system? Do you have any comments or tips?

Anyone web order parts regularly?https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11052-anyone-web-order-parts-regularly/Due to lack of local parts inventory, price matching games, and b.s. clerical errors from vendors I'm tempted to just order all my parts from Amazon or another online wholesaler. The prices are the lowest, there's no denying that. Most PRIME parts arrive the next morning, quicker than waiting for a parts store order. The only issue is with warranty problems but I'm so frustrated with warranty labor claims I won't even go there. If you are in a major population area I'm sure you don't have this problem but in rural areas I'm sure I'm not the only one with a problem. I can't even get brake pads the same day unless I want to use store brand garbage. Today's example is a window switch for a Colorado. $275 from the national chains, 1-2 days away. $125.00 from Amazon, next day shipping (free). Same exact Door-Man part. That's $150 cheaper. I compared fuel pumps, wheel bearings, electrical parts. All are at least 50% less than the locals, apples to apples comparison (same part #) My feelings are if the customer can wait I can make exactly the same money and at the same time save my customer money, in some cases it's hundreds. What are your thoughts?

Shock/Strut sales...https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11057-shockstrut-sales/Looking at my year to year sales comparison. We're up 2% from last year overall but I'm down in two areas - Fluid Flush/Maintenance and Shocks/Struts. I know why we're down on the maintenance services and that is being addressed. What I'm asking for is thoughts on how we might increase sales on shocks/struts.

I'm not comfortable recommending them to customers simply based on miles. If we see leakage we show customers and recommend replacing. If we see abnormal tire wear we show our customers and recommend them. But outside of damage or tire wear are there any tests (aside from test drives and bouncing the vehicle) that can reveal wear? It seems there should be some tool or method to measure what the pressure within the shock/strut is producing and where it should ideally be. I've asked Technicians and so far no one has any ideas.

Perhaps designing a tool to test out shocks/struts...Thanks for any input!

Oil change supplieshttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/11105-oil-change-supplies/First post, so long story long... I am a new TIRE shop owner. I started getting the paperwork side of things together at the end of 2015 to be ready on paper by 01/01/16. I was working for a privately owned, 9 store, tire business first as a service manager, then as an outside sales rep. At the beginning of the year, I turned in my notice and began working as a fleet manager for a friend of mine that has a small fleet. (7 trucks). This was so there would still be money coming in and I could finish getting my business together without there being a conflict of interest with the tire company I was working for. Around March I was able to open cash accounts with 2 major tire wholesalers, and an agreement with another that as soon as I had a brick and mortar store they would start selling to me as well. I paid cash for an old service truck and started selling tires and installing them on location. (We push commercial fleet business as a priority). August 2nd, we were able to get a lease on a permanent location with 3 bays and a store front. Rent is cheap. I have one guy that helps me in the shop and I run the service calls. I also still dispatch for my buddy's small fleet so that I don't have to pull a full salary from the business. We have 2 trucks now, transitioning to a newer truck that I picked up from a friend for little to nothing. After being open for 4 months now, the light truck/passenger market has become our main business and we have adapted our commercial sales to accommodate this. We are the only shop within 20 miles of where we are. It's a rural town with a lot of Ag and commercial traffic. With all this being said, our market is REALLY pushing for a lube/detail business.

The questions:

How do you affordably maintain bulk oil for all the new synthetic, diesel, and older models?

Stock filters, oil, fuel and air?

Consignment filters?

We originally opened with the thought that we were going to be just a tire shop, but the demand is just too great not too entertain the business. Please leave your thoughts and advise. Also, explain your reasoning.

Thank You!!!

Advance to Stop Free Code Scanning!https://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10519-advance-to-stop-free-code-scanning/I was on the phone with my Carquest/Advance parts guy today and he knows how much their "diagnostics" affects us as shops and how much it annoys me. So he mentions to me that yesterday, they received an email from corporate stating that June 1st, all Advance stores may no longer perform free code scans for customers.

I thought this was a pretty big deal, if it is true, for us independent shops.

Hopefully this is correct and will be coming to all Advance/Carquest stores. He said judging by the email, it's not just our regional stores but all stores.

Maybe we can keep things changing for the better.

Next up, let's get Autozone and the other stores to stop their "diagnostics" as people like to call them.

What do you all think? Is this good for us, or will it not really make a difference?

Advance/Carquest Parts Availabilityhttps://www.autoshopowner.com/forums/topic/10527-advancecarquest-parts-availability/For those of you who buy parts from Advance or Carquest, have you been having a harder time getting certain parts since they merged?

For example, certain product lines missing or a shift to more retail parts/less hard parts for professionals?

Or delivery times are down because of low inventory levels?

What's different and what do you think about the changes?
